Harsh, raw and exiting are just a few words to define the sound of the Belgian garageband Gentlemen of Verona. Armed with loud drumbeats and edgy guitar riffs they try to concur a spot in the Belgian alternative music scene. And they seem to succeed. Just one year after their first performance, the group got signed by the Belgian e-label The Wack Attack Barrack (A Brand, Triggerfinger, Mauro Pavlovski, Buscemi...). Their debut-album will appear on the 13th of May 2008.
The album wasn’t recorded in an expensive studio but in their rehearsal room. “When you want a sound that refers to Iggy Pop, PJ Harvey, The Sonics, The Goxxip and The Yeah Yeah Yeah’s... you have to get back to basicsâ€, explains lead singer Debby Termonia. “A Londen friend introduced us to Sam O’Kell. He works as a technician in the famous Abbey Road Studios. During a visit we asked him how we should record our album. He told us: ‘When you want to record garagerock, you only need three things: two very good microphones and one messy garage’. And he was right.â€
The raw recordings were sent to Geert Van Bever (Dead Man Ray, dEUS, Rudy Trouvé Septet, Daan…) He mixed the tracks and transformed them in to an exiting guitar album.
After hearing one of the unmastered demo’s Dirk Swartenbroekx aka Buscemi was so exited about the band’s music that he offered them to do a remix of one of their tracks. The result of Buscemi’s mixing will be released later this year.
